As the Lead Network Design Engineer, you will collaborate closely with the Network & Infrastructure Technical Architect and other Designers to ensure that their network achieves the desired levels of security, availability and performance. You will also contribute to the definition and planning of the Network & Infrastructure programme of work, ensuring that the scope and requirements of their key projects are clear and achievable.
You will be actively engaged in developing their network planning and modelling tools to ensure the company understands and manages their network costs as we continue to expand. You will liaise with their other Lead Designers to ensure that we establish and adhere to high technical standards for their designs and their implementation. You will also work closely with their stakeholders to help them build and optimise their business strategies around the technology we deliver.
You will also be hands-on and have a strong and varied engineering background in the ISP or Telecoms industry. You will lead and take part in projects, working with other engineers to produce and implement designs, build plans, test plans, transition plans and documentation. In carrying out these activities you be a role model both within this team and across the department and will use your insight and knowledge to aid in the development of the skills and practices of their Engineering team.
You’ll also provide a technical escalation to the 3rd line engineers and work out of hours where necessary to deliver infrastructure changes.
Works with the Engineering team to make collaborative decisions on vendors and technologies.
Recommends and seeks business support for technology selections.
Co-ordinate and collaborate with the Engineering team to plan and estimate projects.
Set and communicate security and technical standards to Engineering team, monitoring and supporting their application.
Work with team manager to identify development needs and opportunities of design engineers.
Brings technical excellence into the team and ensures best practice is applied design, testing, documentation and change management.
Share insight and knowledge with stakeholders to help build a vision and strategy for their products and services.
Co-ordinate with stakeholders to help build strong relationships with customers, partners and vendors.
Gather and analyse requirements from the business including quality, security, performance and operational support in line with organisational policies.
Determine and document designs that meet the business requirements in line with long-term technical strategies.
Build, configure and test these designs to demonstrate that they meet the business needs in line with their engineering process.
Deliver these designs into their live environments in line with their change management process.
Document the built environment and operational maintenance plans to allow safe transition to normal operations.
Provide technical escalation for the 3rd line operations engineers.
Work out of hours where necessary to deliver infrastructure changes.
Skills - Essential
Subject matter expert within the networking field but has broad understanding in other technical areas sufficient to contribute to broader more strategic discussions
Successful track record in working within a design or engineering team in an ISP, Telco or other technical services environment.
Experienced in leading and overseeing the technical design process
Excellent consultancy skills
Experience working with and selecting partners and external vendors to assist in the delivery of solutions
Excellent knowledge of best practice engineering & design principles and capable of successfully leading and implementing these
Excellent problem-solving skills, using a methodical and analytical approach to dealing with complex fault escalations
Experienced working in project-based environment
Coaching / mentoring skills
Up to date understanding of the latest industry developments / new technology in your areas of expertise
Successful track record in communicating vision and ideas and sharing knowledge at all technical and business levels.
In-depth knowledge and experience of building and enhancing network infrastructure using the same technologies as those deployed within the company including some or allof:Large scale ISP network technologies at all layers: IP, NAT, OSPF, ISIS, BGP, .1q, VLANs, STP, RSTP, VRRP/HSRP, Optical networking
Hardware vendors: Juniper, Ericsson, Foundry/Brocade, Cisco, Zyxel, Huawei
Large scale ISP access services: Ethernet, Broadband, Mobile, QoS, IPv6, VoIP, SIP
Corporate networks, firewall management, PCI-DSS, WiFi
Network and authentication services: DNS, RADIUS, Tacacs, Active Directory, Asterisk
Configuration management: Puppet, GIT, SCCM, rancid
Network management: OpenNMS, Nagios, MRTG, SNMP, Cacti, SCOM, ELK, U2000, ZMS, JunOS Space
Tools development: Perl, shell, PHP, Python, SQL or other scripting languages
Skills - Desirable
Strong mixture of both network and systems skills
Experience of wider range of vendors and technologies
Successful track record in helping to develop a high performing team.
Strong industry awareness and keen interest in applying emerging technologies to a stable infrastructure environment
Experience of building network planning and modelling tools
Experience of building test environments and test tools, applying TDD or BDD practices to infrastructure
Experience of building SDN/NFV networks or working in a continuous integration environment
Knowledge of project management tools and techniques, preferably using agile or lean methodology
Degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering or equivalent relevant qualifications
